The 48th edition of the ArMeN festival, an event which takes its name from the words Art, Sea and Snow, and opens the ball of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez’s major events, kicks off this Friday, March 6, with the opening of the exhibition at 5.30pm at the Lavoir Vasserot, followed by a welcome drink for competitors at the Club at 7pm.
Created in 1978 by René Perrier, this event combines sailing, skiing and art, offering an art event, a skiing event and two weekends of racing.
This year, as planned, there are a few changes – sailboats will not be visiting Cavalaire as the port is undergoing work
The race committee, chaired by Alice Coquant, has therefore concocted a longer coastal course for this first weekend of racing.
For art lovers, the magnificent art exhibition organized by Cécile de Kock takes place this year at the Lavoir Vasserot (the Salle Jean Despas being occupied with the municipal elections).
Five painters and sculptors are exhibiting at the Lavoir Vasserot, open to all and free of charge from 10am to 7pm until March 17 inclusive.
The first task of each team (one crew member per boat) is to create a work of art based on the year’s theme: “Guardians of the Sea” (real or imaginary creatures, marine heroes).
All the creations produced are exhibited at the Club and the works will be graded by the ARMEN Festival jury.
The skiing event will still take place in Auron on March 13, hoping for sunny skies as the snow is already here.
Nearly 40 crews compete for various prizes, including the “André Hermann” Challenge for best combined ski-sailing ranking, the “René Perrier” Challenge for best combined art-sailing ranking and, of course, the Armen Trophy for best combined art-ski-sailing ranking.
And let’s not forget the rankings for each discipline, including sailing, which is counted towards the Mediterranean IRC championship by the Yacht Club de France’s racing division.
